Fur wraps -- one of them a fox -- added a touch of glam.Designers Stefano Citron and Federico Piaggi debuted their first collection for the Ferré fashion house after only being hired in July -- and it carried the clear mark of the late Gianfranco Ferré.

The pair also presented evening dresses out of raffia that had a highly textured look.Designing twins Dean and Dan Caten included elements that have permeated this round of Milan previews, notably fringe, bare backs, one-shoulder dresses and long skirts, but in a much more casual and youthful way.The color palate was monochromatic, including white, beige, black and purple. Actresses sizzle with red-hot dresses

Actresses sizzle with red-hot dresses

Playing up one of the most popular colours of the fall season, the red carpet was awash in a variety of crimson and scarlet dresses at the Prime Time Emmy Awards Sunday."One of fall's hottest trend colours is crimson, and the stars didn't miss a beat on the Emmy's red carpet this year," said style expert Sam Saboura, citing Lea Michele, Kate Winslet, Nina Dobrev, Kerry Washington and Adrianne Palicki among the many stars wearing the bold colour.Even actor Allan Cumming opted for the hue, wearing red pants with his tuxedo jacket.

Additionally, bright blues and aquas - showcased during this past week's Fashion Week as colours to wear next spring - showed up on stars such as Cobie Smulders, Claire Danes and Amy Poehler."Sleeves were everywhere," observed fashion watcher Shara Koplowitz. "Actresses wore sleeves that best accentuated their arms."That meant short sleeves on Michele, Poehler and Gwyneth Paltrow, capped sleeves on Winslet and Christine Baranski, and long sleeves on Laura Linney, Melissa McCarthy, Loretta Devine, Jayma Mays and Mayim Bialik. For Bialik, wearing long sleeves was not a fashion choice, but a religious one.

"I'm a Jewish person, and for me, my goal was to try to cover up at least to the elbows, and [a hem that goes] all the way to the ground," said the Big Bang Theory actress. "I'm a modest dresser, so I was looking for something that wasn't strapless."With the inordinate amount of sleeves came less jewelry. "The more dress you have on, the less jewelry you wear," said Koplowitz. "You can't go for flash. It has to be understated."Of course, there are always some exceptions. Koplowitz felt Christina Hendricks' "va-va-voom" dress was "a bit out of place" at the Emmys, and the jury is still out on how appropriate Paltrow's sheer-midriff gown fared with fashionistas.

Can Old Dresses Help a Kenyan Dressmaker ?

Can Old Dresses Help a Kenyan Dressmaker ?

My Thursday column tells the story of Jane Ngoiri, a woman in Nairobi who has managed to transform her life – and her children’s – with some outside help. Originally,Celebrity Stylist George Kotsiopoulos Highlights Fall's Hottest Looks Featuring Fashion's Most Unexpected Star Fabric , I thought I would write this column about microfinance, but as I followed Jane it became increasingly obvious that while her access to credit helped her start a business, the biggest help was the psychological push to save and start thinking about the future.

I’m sure some readers will want to help Jane and her family, by digging out any old fancy dresses you may have in your basement. Her specialty is buying used wedding dresses or bridesmaid dresses on the second-hand markets of Nairobi (typically donated in the U.S. and then send in bulk containers to Africa), and then cutting them up and turning them into two or three children’s dresses. Finding this raw material is tough for her, and hours of prodding the used clothing markets in Nairobi may turn up only one dress. So when I mentioned to her that readers might have some dresses they’d be happy to send her, you should have seen her face light up.

The television documentary company that I’m working with (we’re filming a PBS documentary of “Half the Sky,” the book about empowering women that I wrote with my wife, Sheryl WuDunn) has agreed to accept parcels at its New York office. The company, Show of Force, will then trans-ship the dresses to Nairobi, paying the shipping costs and customs duties (which can be considerable), and get them into Jane’s hands. I hope to be able to run a follow-up blog item down the line with photos of Jane and whatever you send her.

Party Dress Project

Party Dress Project

“I think it’s pretty overwhelming,” Northbrook mom Stacy Simpson recalled about outfitting her daughter for the bar-and-bat-mitzvah cycle. When Harper hit seventh grade, she was invited to at least 12 events in one season. “We’re all being more conscientious on how we’re spending our money,” Simpson said.So the mother-daughter duo decided to buy three separate dresses to rotate through the functions.Kendall Jenner Exudes Sexuality in Sherri Hill Shoot.“That seemed like more than enough to me,” Simpson recalled. “The problem is that these girls in seventh grade are growing leaps and bounds.”

So by the time her daughter advanced a grade, the dresses no longer fit. “We’ve got to do something with all these dresses,” Simpson said she thought. In the end, she teamed up with another Northbrook mom, Beth Hirshman, to create The Party Dress Project. Now in its third year, the organization provides teens throughout the North Shore with formal wear for cheap. The concept is simple. Hundreds of “gently used” dresses are collected and then sold at an annual “Party Dress Project Boutique.”While the dresses differ in sizes and styles, one thing remains the same: a $25 price tag for each.

“What we’ve tried to put our focus on is girls serving girls,” Simpson explained. In doing that, all event proceeds are donated to a charity selected by the organization’s junior board made up of 15 teens.Simpson emphasized that the project is a great way to be economically savvy, while also teaching her daughter and other girls like her about community service. During the first year, 400 dresses were collected and $5,500 in proceeds was donated to Youth Services of Glenview-Northbrook. Last year, the number of dresses jumped to 800 and $6,600 was handed over to Erika’s Lighthouse, an organization that helps depressed adolescents.

Kendall Jenner Exudes Sexuality in Sherri Hill Shoot

Kendall Jenner Exudes Sexuality in Sherri Hill Shoot

Kendall Jenner, although just 15, is already a sex symbol. The Cinderella to step-sisters Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian, has learned a thing or two about cashing in on her beauty.Kendall teased her fans with photos from her latest modeling gig for prom dress designer Sherri Hills. She posted the snaps on her personal blog.“Hey guys!! I have a ton of pics from my Sherri Hill shoot this weekend so I’ll be posting them all this week!” she wrote.“Kylie joined me on set and we wore the most AMAZING dresses. I was obsessed with every single one!!!”

Kendall raised eyebrows for a bikini photo shoot that many critics thought overly sexualized her for her age.She looked hot and frisky in the prom dresses, but at least they were more age appropriate. She wore a white strapless gown, a silver sequinned gown, a short silver mini dress matched with hot pink tights, and green sequinned blouse with a black mermaid-style skirt. The Kardashian marketing machine has begun featuring Kendal and Kylie more and more on Kim’s E! reality show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.”with be a Proud Owner of Contemporary Jewelery
.
Whether they will be allowed to eclipse Kim and her sisters remains to be seen, but Kendal has the looks to be the biggest brand in the Kardashian clan. She signed with Wihelmina Models, and has already repped for Forever 21, Luca Couture and Leah Madden’s Summer 2012 campaign Pirouette. She acknowledges it’s a college campus and many people couldn’t care less about how they look — she, too, didn’t care her first two years of school — but Cooke says the change comes along with a bit of maturity and looking at school as her job. “You start to take pride in the way you look and present yourself because you never know who you’re going to meet or what professor will be able to help you later on,” Cooke says. “If you make a good impression every day in class, it says a lot about you and I think that will translate when professors are recommending you and speaking on your behalf.”
